Quito (Pichincha).- Yachay University’s new director Carlos Castillo-Chavez affirmed the institution, also known as the City of Knowledge, is a unique opportunity to make history in the Latin American world.

Castillo met yesterday with president of the Republic Rafael Correa and other supporters in the Ministry of Sports to present their 20-year plan and a program for the first 100 days of administration.

In its immediate plan, the scholar informed he will meet with directors, communities and institutes to have the opportunity to learn from the experience of leaders in higher education and promote intense investigation in all areas.

Regarding the 20-year plan, made by the intellectual community of Yachay, Castillo-Chavez explained that it contains the creation of doctorate programs, the increase of undergraduate students to 2.500, the increase of investigation teachers, the production of knowledge in terms of articles, patents, among other factors.

The director informed he has met with students and his conclusion is that Yachay is a very solid university and highlighted their extraordinary enthusiasm for the future of Ecuador.

He also said he is thankful with Ecuadorians and with the president for the opportunity of leading this project. Castillo-Chavez is an outstanding mathematician, scientific, social scientist and US activist from Mexico with a brilliant career in the United States where he has served as teacher and director.

Among his most recent posts are Regents Professor and Joaquin Bustoz Jr Professor at the University of Arizona where he also served as director of the Simon A. Levin Center of Mathematical, Computational and Modeling Services, director of the Institute of Mathematics and Theoretical Biology and director of the Institute for the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Understanding, according to information from Yachay Tech. /SD El Ciudadano
